What percentage of household energy will be used for heating my home?
On average, heating your home accounts for 34% of household energy consumption. This means that the energy source you choose to heat your home will be a very important decision.
Initially, it seems that heating with gas will be more expensive. The upfront cost may be higher than electricity but the ongoing running costs and energy efficiency far outweigh electricity.
For your reference, the following is a breakdown of average household energy consumption usage:
- 29% Hot Water
- 34% Space Heating
- 8% Range
- 10% Refrigeration
- 8% Lighting
- 13% Other Appliances
A report by BRANZ, (GAS Association of New Zealand – National Gas Review – Autumn 2007) states that ‘although there is no alternative to electricity for some applications, like lighting and running specific electric appliances, but equally, there is no reason why direct use of gas can’t be used for cooking, and space and water heating.'
