Why are people worried about Natural Gas supplies in New Zealand running out?
Gas has been largely used in the past very inefficiently to produce electricity. It is the power generating companies that are looking for new supplies. This is what is written about in the press leading people to think we are running out altogether.
Our existing fields and new ones coming on line have more than enough gas for the domestic and commercial markets for the foreseeable future.
It is a well known that the supplies of natural gas from the giant Maui field are declining but there are a number of existing producing gas fields to offset Maui, such as Kapuni, and new discoveries, such as Pohokura, Kupe, and Turangi-1, that are currently being developed for production.
Homes, hospitals, schools, and restaurants account for only around 5 percent of current gas usage in New Zealand. There is plenty of gas for this market as far forward as can be seen.
