Floor or Ceiling Outlet Systems - Which will be most effective?
The choice of floor or ceiling systems is usually determined by the design of the house. Both systems are very quick and effective.
Floor outlet systems
Distributing heat into a room at floor level will heat the room well because the heat enters and mixes at a low level, where the air is at its coldest.
The position of the floor outlet needs to carefully selected to achieve the best results. The outlet needs to be placed far enough away from the return air grill so the heat has time to pass across the room before it gets to the return air grill.
To offset the cold transmitted through window glass, the outlet should be placed below a window whenever possible. This will help reverse cold air currents and reduce condensation on the window.
Outlets will generally be placed 100mm from the wall. This distance should be increased when placing below windows, so that the curtains will not billow, retarding the heating circulation.
As a general guide, one heating outlet will heat around fifteen square metres (at a stud height of 2.4metres)
Ceiling outlet systems
Like with floor outlet systems, ceiling diffusers need to be carefully positioned to counteract cold transmitted through windows and far enough away from the draw of air returning to the return air grill.
Ceiling outlets require higher pressure to direct warm air down to floor level, than floor grills.
Provided they have been set up correctly, ceiling systems are about 3% more efficient than floor systems. This is because the airflow from the ceiling outlet also drags the warmer air off the ceiling and pushes it down to the floor, giving a better distribution of warmth than from the floor.
The return air intake must be positioning as low as possible for ceiling outlet installations in order to avoid short cycling and to allow the coolest air at floor level to be recycled first.
Using a bedroom wardrobe, linen or broom cupboard, or even boxing in a duct on an internal corner down to floor level can help achieve this.
